Practice for your class, set by you.

Write questions or import them, assign them with a join code, and see who finished. Gavel is free for faculty, and your students sit what you assign for free.

An example. The class and the names are invented.

What you can do

  • Open a class and get a join code on a card you can project on the first day.
  • Publish material your class can read and cannot change.
  • Write multiple choice by hand, with the misconception behind every wrong answer.
  • Or import a spreadsheet of questions.
  • Generate an essay exam from your own materials and read its whole answer key before anyone sees it.
  • Nothing reaches a class until you mark it ready.
  • Assign with a due date that labels the work and never locks it.
  • See who finished, by name.
  • Let students flag the muddiest point without their name attached.
  • Pick the next cold call from your roster.
  • Print any set as a paper quiz.

What it never does

  • It never shows you a student's score or answers.
  • It never pools your materials with anyone else's.
  • It never builds a profile of you or your exams from what students upload.

What it costs

  • Classes, assignments and completion tracking are free.
  • Drafting with AI follows the same limits as any account.
  • Your students sit what you assign for free. AI feedback on an essay is their own optional extra.

How verification works

Sign up with your school address, confirm it, and we check your listing in your school's faculty directory. If the directory cannot settle it, a person reviews it.

How students are expected to use Gavel alongside your school's rules is set out in the Academic Honor Code, which also gives faculty a way to raise a concern.
